A Ride in the Clouds
Babadag (Pronounced Baba Dah)
Babadag is a towering mountain in the Fethiye district of southwestern Turkey. With an elevation of 1,969 meters (6,460 feet) above sea level it is one of the most popular paragliding spots in the world, attracting adrenaline seekers from all around the globe. However, not everyone wants to jump off a mountain to experience the stunning views of the Turkish coastline so for those who prefer a more leisurely ride to enjoy the scenery, there is the Babadag cable car.
Breathtaking Views
The cable car, officially known as the Fethiye Babadag Air Sports and Recreation Centre, opened in 2021 and has quickly become a popular ride attraction for tourists and locals alike. It starts from the foothills of Babadag and takes passengers up to two levels. Each car holds 8 passengers. The first level at 1200 meters has a stage and seating area for concerts, the second level at 1700 meters (5,577 feet) has a viewing area and restaurant overlooking the breathtakingly beautiful Taurus Mountains, Oludeniz and the Blue Lagoon. This second level is considered one of the best advantage points to watch the paragliding activities from but do bear in mind it can get chilly up there even on a warm day.
Ride Higher Levels
The cable car ride takes about 16 minutes each way. The cabins are comfortable and spacious, with large windows that provide panoramic views of the stunning scenery below and once at the upper level it is possible to take a two-person chair lift up to a further two higher level and hike the final stage to the summit at 2,000 meters.
At the top of the mountain, there is a viewing platform where visitors can take in the breath-taking views, enjoy a cup of Turkish tea, and take photos to remember the experience. There is also a restaurant serving traditional Turkish food, as well as a gift shop where visitors can buy souvenirs and mementoes of their visit.
