Sandy Bliss moved to the coastal town of Fethiye on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey in 2012 and despite personal tragedy, does not in any way regret her decision. The owner of a beautiful Turkey property, she was kind enough to share her story with us;
“My husband Chris and I, lived in Sandhurst, Berkshire but hated the grotty weather in England”
Said Sandy (aged 53), “I was born in Zimbabwe and Chris was born in India so we knew the benefits of a more benign climate and, as Chris was retired, we wanted to spend our final years in a country that could allow us to enjoy year round good weather. Naturally I jumped at the chance of early retirement”.
With these thoughts in mind the couple set about looking for the ideal country in which to spend their lives. Having researched various countries Turkey seemed the most attractive. In 2010 they flew into Bodrum with friends for a holiday and stayed in the Lake Tuzla region and began to realise what Turkey had to offer.
It was however Suleyman Akbay, Managing Director of Oceanwide Properties, who found them their dream home.
Continued Sandy “We had known Suleyman for quite a number of years and he recommended we visit the location of Fethiye as he was quite sure that this area would appeal to us”.
The couple owned a home in the UK but in costly Berkshire this did not compare with the spacious three bedroom modern stone home they were able to purchase, for a much smaller outlay, in the lush hillside not far from the sea in the village of Yesil Uzumlu. The Turkey property has a large garden, beautiful private pool and stunning views. “It was a magical time for us both, but sadly Chris died in 2013 having spent just one year in paradise”, said Sandy.
“Losing Chris when we had only married in June 2010 was a terrible shock but at least we were happy in Turkey”
Sandy continued, “I am filling my days with friends and neighbours, lots of walking, exploring and caring for street animals. There is a good English, German and French community within a very traditional Turkish village. The Turkish community is very welcoming and friendly and very easy to chat to. We also brought our two cats over from the UK and have adopted a further 9 street cats and a street dog called Kara.”
Sandy is also involved in the local community which has a number of events and luckily she has kept a strong relationship with Suleyman and his staff who has an Oceanwide Properties’ office on the promenade in Fethiye, so she can pop in for a coffee whenever she is passing.
Concluded Sandy, “Finding Suleyman from the days when he had his UK office in Farnborough, has been wonderful. He helped Chris and I find our dream home and is so patient, professional and just a really nice guy that I cannot thank him enough for his help through the years. I have no hesitation in recommending Oceanwide Properties to anyone looking for a property in Turkey.”
