Gocek in Turkey’s Fethiye district is yet another legendary Turkish coastal town and perfect for escaping from both the hustle and bustle of city living and the depressing nature of the British weather. In fact, just sit back, relax, and let the team here at Oceanwide Properties inspire you with the songs and tales of this beautiful coastal resort:
History
The history of Gocek, or Kalimche as it was originally called, is particularly fascinating. It is in the waters of Gocek for instance that the legendary Icarus is believed to have landed following his brave flight from prison.
The town’s natural harbour setting also played a significant role in Gocek’s history and the development of the entire region as a whole. That’s because during the Ottoman empire regular exports of chrome touched down on its shoreline. Other historical details? Walk a mile or so outside the town and you’ll find ancient burial tombs dating as far back as 2,000 years. Then there is Telmessos, the greatest of Lycian cities and one of the oldest on the Gulf of Fethiye.
Change to Tourism & Lifestyle
Located only 20 minutes from the airport at Dalaman Airport and surrounded on its coastal locations with beautiful smaller islands, Gocek is undoubtedly one of the world’s most sought after locations for anyone seeking property for sale in Fethiye and Turkey as a whole.
The beauty of Gocek lies in the fact that development is strictly controlled in the area thanks to the Special Protection Act. You’ll find no multi-storey hotels, villas or other developments here. As a result the quaint fishermen village feel the town enjoys is set to remain for decades to come. Despite this, the town still boasts plenty of venues, restaurants and entertainment for modern living.
Boating and Sailors Ahoy!
Gocek is loved by boating enthusiasts and sailors alike as the daily dots of sailing boats and gulets in the harbour will testify. With six marinas and the Belediye quay, there is plenty of space for boat enthusiasts, without a sense of overcrowding. It’s true that harbourfront Gocek property is the ultimate lifestyle living retreat and here it’s shared by both locals and part-time Turkey property owners – ensuring there is no ‘ghost town’ feel about Gocek.
Living in Gocek
Gocek has the convenience of the Dalaman-Fethiye highway, which connects to all major cities in Turkey. Meanwhile, for provisions there are a number of small shops lining the town’s main street and square.
There are around 4,500 permanent residents in Gocek which means peace is guaranteed during off-peak tourism times. However, even during the busy tourist season, Göcek doesn’t get as crowded as some of its resort town neighbours.
If you’ve been searching for Turkey property which offers coastal living away from the tourist crowds, Gocek may indeed prove perfect. A bit of a cliché it’s true, but here at Oceanwide Properties Turkey we’d describe Göcek on the point of the Fethiye Gulf, is the ultimate Turkish delight.
