Is Turkey safe? Consider this…

There have been bombs in London. Did you cancel that camping trip to Cornwall or that lazy cruise along the Norfolk Broads? There has been a terror attack in Manchester. Did you opt out of that Stag do in Blackpool or cancel that weekend away in the Lake District? There has been terrorism in New York. Did you forgo that family holiday in Orlando or that knees up in Vegas? There were bombings in Ankara and Istanbul. Are you now avoiding that dreamy blue cruise or that bargain holiday in Bodrum?  It’s an unfortunate reality that a threat from terrorist and extremist groups exists the world over as the recent horrific attacks around the world have proved.

Put the risk into perspective.

Turkey is a vast country. It’s over two and a half times the size of Italy, larger than England and France put together. The Syrian boarder, where the majority of Turkey’s conflict is taking place, is well over 20 hours drive from the popular tourist destinations along the Mediterranean and Aegean coast. That’s the distance from London to Berlin. Governments, the military and intelligence services across the globe are dealing with the threat of terrorism every day, not just in Turkey. In light of increased activity, every European country has upped their security measures, especially at government buildings, embassies, airports and public gatherings. Turkey is no exception. Foreign advisory sites are suggesting we avoid large scale demonstrations and public gatherings, especially in large metropolitan and capital cities across the globe. This applies to Istanbul, Ankara, London, Manchester, Paris, Brussels and pretty much every other major European city.

You are more likely to win the lottery or be struck by lightning than you are to be blown up by a terrorist.

We face risks everyday but most of us choose not to think about them. If you smoke, you significantly increase your chances of death by cancer. If you drive a car, you are likely to have a number of car accidents in your life, in some cases these can be fatal. If you hire a moped during your holiday, you increase your chances of injury during your stay. If you drink too much in your local bar, you are far more likely to suffer alcohol poisoning that can result in health issues or even be fatal. These are the everyday factors and realities that are far more likely to kill us.

Don’t avoid Turkey in 2016. Come and enjoy the beauty and magic of the country.

Yes a terror threat does exist in Turkey, but it does everywhere. Come to Turkey and enjoy the culture, the history, the people and the beauty. Enjoy the warm welcomes, the smiling faces, the amazing food and the diversity of the surroundings. Enjoy the laid-back lifestyle, the long summer days and value for money to be had at current exchange rates.

Still not convinced?

Well if a picture is worth a thousand words, then maybe this video by Matador Networks film maker Piotr Wancerz and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism will be worth a million. To avoid Turkey you are avoiding this…

We have an apartment in Calis and love the place, it’s like our 2nd home. It’s beautiful, full of history, the food is great and the people are amazing. Please, if you’re thinking of going, don’t let the terrorist attacks put you off. They are nowhere near places like Olu Deniz, Fethiye and Side. My heart aches for the people who have lost loved ones in the cowardly terrorist attacks and airports are a worrying place to be but it won’t stop me going to the only place I love more than my home.
