Michael Buerk, UK TV Presenter and Broadcaster, loves Gocek.

British TV presenter Michael Buerk loves Gocek reported the Telegraph. Buerk is the co-presenter of Britain’s Secret Homes, was a contestant on I’m a Celebrity …get me out of here last year and, during the 1980’s, an award winning BBC journalist for his work covering the Ethiopian famine. The article said that Buerk believes Gocek to be his “kind of town”.

In the interview by York Membury, he described the port of Gocek, 20 minutes drive from Fethiye, as the “Turkish equivalent of Dartmouth or Salcombe”. He said it was a “real magnet for sailors….surrounded by mountains and stunning scenery, boasting an archipelago of beautiful islands.” It is “the place I love most to go sailing”.

Gocek is quite upmarket for Turkey. As a result it hasn’t been wrecked by developers.”

It is true that Gocek is, without doubt, a stunning location and one Buerk “never tires of going back”. As he pointed out “it doesn’t attract that many holidaymakers …it is quite upmarket for Turkey. As a result it hasn’t been wrecked by developers.”

From the interview his passion for the Fethiye areas history and diversity really shows through. He suggests those visiting for the first time should bring Louis de Bernieres book Birds Without Wings, inspired by the authors past trips to Kayakoy, a village often described as a “ghost town” just 15 minutes from Fethiye. Buerk also suggests Kayakoy as a must see due to its fascinating history, describing Kayakoy as “an extraordinary sight”.  The Fethiye fish market also got a mention as the ideal place to take lunch, and raki, jewellery, pistachios and Turkish Delight are some of Buerks favourite take home items.

So why is Gocek so popular? What type of investor opts for a property in Gocek?

Gocek is a yachtsman’s dream and often referred to as Turkey’s equivalent to Cannes. Located at the north-west end of the Gulf of Fethiye, Gocek is blessed with magnificent scenery, looking out over Fethiye’s 12 islands. The natural bay is almost circular and ideal to provide shelter and calm waters for passing yachts. Although there is no central beach to speak of, there is more than enough opportunities to take daily boat tours, traditional gulet cruises or, if a sailor yourself, charter all manner of sailboats or motor yachts. The town centre is small and attractive. It has a good mix of traditional and Mediterranean restaurants, high end bars, shops and boutiques. Gocek is now one of the most affluent, high end resorts along the Turkish coast attracting the famous, rich and wealthy from all over the world. The properties on offer in Gocek reflect this.
