While all eyes are on London’s efforts for the 2012 Olympic, Turkey is setting out grand sporting designs of its own for Summer 2020.
Turkey’s PM, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this week urged UEFA to allow Istanbul to host the EURO 2020 UEFA Championships, adding to existing aims to host the Olympic and Paralympic games the same year.
At a press conference, UEFA President, Michel Platini said he believed `Turkey should host the Euros`, but Istanbul`s bid would be stronger if it did not get the Olympic games.
UEFA opens the bidding process for UEFA Euro 2020 next week, with a decision on hosting expected to be taken late 2013/early 2014.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chooses its 2020 host on September 7 next year. Alongside Istanbul, Doha, Madrid and Tokyo are also in the running.
With Istanbul property values already being bumped up by big business interest and a burgeoning population, the promise of either sporting event bodes well for strategic property investors.
