This year Shrove Tuesday – or Pancake Day – takes place on Tuesday 4 March, and the town of Kalkan is planning a Great Pancake Party to celebrate.
If you have a Kalkan or Fethiye property, maybe you will want to join in with the pancake celebrations? After all, there can’t be many of you who don’t like pancakes, whether your tastes run to the simple sugar and lemon pancake, pancakes with chocolate or toffee sauces, or you prefer savoury pancakes which envelope delicious fillings made from vegetables and meat?
The Great Pancake Party does, however, have some serious reasoning behind it. The party was set up by Lynn Hedgecoe, a villa owner in Kalkan who suffers from the little-known heart condition dilated cardiomyopathy (the heart dilates and becomes less efficient at pumping blood, which in turn affects the other organs of the body).
The aim of the pancake party, which will also be taking place in other venues and in the UK, is to raise money for the charity the Cardiomyopathy Association, which will support research into this condition.
Lynn’s party in Kalkan takes place on 4 March starting at 3pm. It will include pancake challenges, including pancake tossing (more challenging than it looks…) and pancake eating. There is sure to be a pancake made with your filling of choice. The location is to be finalised, but it does promise to be a lot of fun and a great way to make yourself part of local life if you have recently bought a property for sale in Kalkan.
Of course all of that eating may require a little bit of activity later on in the day to burn off the calories. The beach at Kalkan offers plenty of opportunities for swimming and water sports to assuage your guilt. Or why not spend your morning working up an appetite for all of the pancake goodies to come? Kalkan is also close to many ancient Lycian sites, and from the town you can make a day trip via one of the local tour agencies to visit these beautiful historical sites of Xanthos, Pinara, Patana, Letoon et al, which dot the surrounding mountains and hillsides.
