Purslane.
This lovely little wild herb can be seen growing just about everywhere here in Fethiye it appears at random in my plant pots and anywhere in the garden I’ve even seen it poking through cracks in the pavement and yes, they do sell it at the market.
Purslane also contains the highest levels of Omega-3 fatty acids among all green plants, making it a super food. It is also delicious.
In Turkish it is known as Semizoto. Purslane is very often overlooked and seen as a weed in many societies but we now know it is a great source of:
Vitamin C
Iron
Magnesium
Manganese
Potassium
Calcium
And
Omega 3.
It’s also a great anti-inflammatory.
Why not try it for yourself, I have added a lovely purslane pesto recipe for you to try.
Wash all leaves thouroughly
Roughly chop a cup of leaves
Place them in a blender with plenty of olive oil,
a clove of garlic,
lemon juice half a lemon should be enough but add more if you want,
parmesan two table spoons,
and any nut of your choice (almonds, if you’ve got ’em). A handfull
Pulse, and you’ve got purslane pesto. Add salt and pepper to taste.
This is delicious on any salad and also goes great with pasta.
