Dogan-Sam-Sheila

Please show your support for Dogan Eraslan, former owner of Mosaik Bahce, Serkan Tarim, local vet, and Sam Tucker of One Man Many Paths, as they kayak a distance of 170 nautical miles (315km) from Antalya to Fethiye raising money for Fethiye International Group (FIG).

SAM AND DOGAN’S JOURNEY NOW WELL UNDERWAY

Dogan and Sam started the journey last Thursday, September 1st. They will be joined by Serkan a little later in the trip. Waved off in Fethiye by supporters including FIGs Chairperson  Sheila Tongue, they set off with their Kayaks in tow to Antalya. They left Konyaalti beach around 4.30pm on the first leg of the journey that is expected to take just over three weeks to complete. They are planning to stop off at various beaches, hotels and make camps at various points along the way – keep track of their progress on Sams Facebook Page One Man Many Paths. They hope to complete the trip and reach Fethiye’s Yacht Classic Hotel around 6pm on September 25th.

PROGRESS THE FIRST WEEK

It’s been a week since Sam and Dogan started their journey. It’s a hard ride as they are mainly heading against the natural current meaning the going is often tough. Despite this, and a major rainstorm hitting Antalya over the weekend leaving Sunday spent drying out the kit, the duo have made excellent progress so far. A few days at sea has meant they now have a good idea of the regular wind patterns enabling them to judge when to push on and when to rest up. Afternoon winds make for irregular waves and harder going so leaving early is key. Over the first 4 days they managed to cover 40km and last Monday over 20km in one day taking them to Tekirova near Olympus. According to recent updates on Sams Facebook Page, a week in and they have safely made it over one of the hardest legs around the headland past Adrasan – a great achievement and we wish you luck guys!

Sam and Dogan have just over two weeks to go. They will be joined by Serkan soon for the final few stretches towards Fethiye. This is an amazing trip and all for a wonderful cause. We hope that readers will consider sponsoring Sam, Dogan and Serkan’s journey and in turn support children in the local community.

ABOUT FIG – Raising money for a wonderful cause

Fethiye International Group, or FIG as it’s often referred, is a Fethiye based charity founded in 2004 by a group of foreign and Turkish residents wanting to help children in the local community. From simple beginnings and book swaps in the early days, the organisation and its supporters quickly grew and FIG now plays an important role in the local community. They help in many ways – by providing supplies and furniture to schools, paying for the school bus or medical treatments for kids of low income families – they have even helped fund and set up a special room at Fethiye’s Devlet (Government) Hospital for those with Thalessemia.

GET INVOLVED WITH FIG

It’s easy to get involved with FIG, the group run a wide variety of events, have a volunteer run charity shop, hold weekly coffee mornings and host boat trips  –  a little time, thought or money goes a long way to help local kids.

Wednesday Coffee Mornings. Head along to Fora Restaurant on Fethiye’sharbour front (next to the harbour side car park opposite Finansbank) between 11am-1pm on a Wednesday for a tasty slice of homemade cake and a coffee. Running all year, the coffee mornings are popular and a great chance to meet others in the area knowing the proceeds from the treats your eating are going to charity.

Visit/Donate to FIG Charity Shop. FIG’s charity shop is run by volunteers. It’s based a short drive or bus ride from Fethiye, on the Antalya Road. Here you can find second hand clothes, household items, jewellery and a whole heap of other goodies donated by locals in the area.

Attend FIGs Craft Fayres. FIG run regular craft fayre’s on Fethiyes central harbour front between Address Cafe and the childrens playground. Pop along and browse the table top sale – normally an eclectic mix of handmade gifts, jewellery, art, pickles, paintings and cakes. The next fayre is Tuesday 27th September from 4pm.

Boat Trips. Escape and explore the wonderful bays and waters around Fethiye with FIG. Throughout the summer FIG run boat trips, some during the day, some sunset cruises. Join the next sunset trip on September 17th, see FIG website for details.
