Iyi Bayramlar from everyone at Oceanwide Properties. Today Turks everywhere celebrate Cumhuriyet Bayrami, or Republic Day as you may know it. Today marks the anniversary of the declaration of independence in Turkey.

A historic day and a national celebration.

The 29th of October each year is a public holiday in Turkey. The holiday officially lasts 35 hours starting at 1pm on the 28th of October. It was on this day back in 1923 that the Grand National Assembly formally proclaimed Turkey a Republic, a constitution no longer under Ottoman rule. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became Turkey’s first President.

Ataturk led the War of Independence that lasted three and a half years and is said to have regarded this day as Turkey’s most important holiday.

Republic day is celebrated in varying ways around Turkey. Normally town squares and stadiums put on shows that include theater sketches, parades, poetry and traditional music and dance. Politicians give speeches, the television channels air films and documentaries about Ataturk and local schools put on performances. Wreaths are laid at Ataturk monuments and at Ataturk’s mausoleum in Ankara.

Fethiye Cumhuriyet celebrations

Fethiye loves to celebrate and driving past the Fethiye Football Stadium this morning we saw many people wielding flags and dressed up in readiness for the 10.30am parade (see photo). It looks set to be quite an event so pop down if you get a chance. There is also normally a procession with flags and music centered around the Town Square.
