The Blue Lagoon, Oustanding Beauty of Ölüdeniz

Discover the History Behind Türkiye’s Most Famous Beach

Few places in Türkiye are as instantly recognisable as the breathtaking Blue Lagoon (Ölüdeniz). With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, dramatic mountain backdrop, and peaceful atmosphere, it has become one of the country’s most photographed natural landmarks and a must-visit destination for travellers from around the world.

Located just 15 kilometres south of Fethiye on the spectacular Turquoise Coast, the Blue Lagoon is far more than simply a beautiful beach. It is a place where fascinating geology, ancient history, local legends, and modern adventure come together to create one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable destinations.

Why is it Called Ölüdeniz?

The name Ölüdeniz literally translates as “Dead Sea” in Turkish. Fortunately, there is nothing lifeless about this incredible location. Instead, the name refers to the lagoon’s unusually calm waters.

Protected from the open Mediterranean by a natural sand spit, the lagoon remains remarkably still even when the surrounding sea becomes rough. This unique geographical formation has created the tranquil waters that visitors enjoy today and has made Ölüdeniz famous throughout the world.

A Landscape Shaped by Nature

The Blue Lagoon is one of Türkiye’s finest examples of a coastal lagoon. Over thousands of years, waves and coastal currents gradually deposited sand and shingle to form the distinctive curved barrier that separates the calm inner lagoon from the open sea.

This natural process created two completely different beaches side by side:

  • The sheltered Blue Lagoon with calm, shallow, crystal-clear water.
  • Belcekız Beach, where visitors can enjoy the open Mediterranean and gentle waves.

Surrounding the lagoon are fragrant pine forests and the impressive slopes of Babadağ Mountain, rising nearly 2,000 metres above sea level. The contrast between emerald forests, limestone cliffs, and brilliant blue water creates one of the most spectacular coastal landscapes in Europe.

The Ancient History of the Area

Long before tourists discovered its beauty, the region formed part of the ancient civilisation of Lycia, one of Anatolia’s most fascinating cultures.

The Lycians established prosperous settlements throughout the area over 2,500 years ago, and nearby ancient cities such as Kayaköy, Tlos, Pinara, and Telmessos (modern-day Fethiye) became important trading centres.

The calm waters around Ölüdeniz also offered a natural refuge for sailors navigating the Mediterranean. Historians believe the sheltered bay was used for centuries as a safe anchorage during storms, making it an important stopping point along ancient maritime routes.

The Legend of Belcekız

Like many beautiful places in Türkiye, Ölüdeniz has its own romantic legend.

According to local folklore, a handsome sailor regularly visited the bay to collect fresh water. During one visit, he fell deeply in love with a young woman named Belcekız, who lived nearby. Whenever his ship returned, the couple would meet along the shore.

One day a violent storm threatened the ship. The sailor urged his father, the captain, to steer towards the sheltered bay where they would be safe. Believing his son was distracted by love rather than danger, the captain refused. During the argument, tragedy struck, and the young sailor lost his life. When Belcekız learned what had happened, she threw herself from the cliffs into the sea.

Today, the open beach beside the lagoon is known as Belcekız Beach, preserving the memory of this timeless local legend.

From Hidden Paradise to International Destination

Until the 1970s and early 1980s, Ölüdeniz remained relatively unknown outside Türkiye. Backpackers and adventurous travellers slowly began discovering its extraordinary scenery, and photographs of the lagoon soon appeared in travel magazines across Europe.

As tourism developed responsibly, Ölüdeniz became one of Türkiye’s flagship holiday destinations while retaining much of its natural charm. The lagoon now forms part of a protected nature park, helping preserve its delicate ecosystem for future generations. Visitors pay a small entrance fee that contributes towards maintaining this exceptional environment.

More Than Just a Beautiful Beach

While swimming remains the main attraction, Ölüdeniz offers far more than simply relaxing beside the water.

World-Class Paragliding

Towering above the lagoon, Babadağ Mountain is recognised as one of the world’s premier paragliding locations. Every day, colourful parachutes glide gracefully over the lagoon, offering unforgettable panoramic views of the coastline.

Boat Excursions

The Blue Lagoon is the perfect starting point for exploring the nearby coastline. Daily boat trips visit:

  • Butterfly Valley
  • St Nicholas Island (Gemiler Island)
  • Cold Water Bay
  • Aquarium Bay
  • Hidden coves only accessible by sea

Walking the Lycian Way

One of the world’s finest long-distance walking trails, the Lycian Way, passes close to Ölüdeniz. Hikers enjoy dramatic coastal scenery, ancient ruins, and traditional Turkish villages while following this internationally acclaimed route.

Wildlife and Conservation

The Blue Lagoon is not only beautiful but also environmentally important.

Its calm waters provide a nursery habitat for numerous marine species, while the surrounding pine forests support a wide variety of birds, butterflies, and Mediterranean wildlife.

The protected status of the area has helped prevent excessive development, allowing visitors to experience one of Türkiye’s best-preserved coastal landscapes.
